Finding Motivation

Are any of you having trouble finding motivation this winter? I certainly am. In fact the past three months or so have not included a whole lot of riding or any other exercise either. I am pretty sure I am in the worse shape I’ve been in in quite awhile. A friend of mine wrote something on Facebook about the Dirty Kanza 200 being a mere six months away. Yikes! I better get my winter plan going!

I have a winter workout  plan. In fact I’ve had it for awhile. I just haven’t found the motivation to get moving on it. I think I burnt myself out riding so much in the scorching heat last summer. Some time off the bike was a good thing, but this has gotten way out of hand. Sometimes life gets in the way. But I have something that will help!

I just bought a new “on the bike camera.” Thanks to a good friend of mine, I was alerted that the Panasonic LX5 was $100 off for Amazon’s Deal of the Day and I nabbed one. It is one of the best small point and shoot cameras out there right now. Getting a new camera always motivates me to take more pictures and this one is a perfect “on the bike camera.”  In fact, I plan on taking it everywhere with me. That’s the beauty of a small camera vs the big DSLRs – convenience. Oh I will still use the big, bad Nikon for critical shoots, but this little baby will be in my pocket all the time.

I’m gonna get out there and ride in the cold this weekend! If for nothing else to use the new camera. I will share some pictures and thoughts from the new LX5 in the near future. Once I get some miles in that will surely motivate me to get the winter plan in high gear!

Kristy - Can I ask why you chose the LX5? What makes it one of the best? There are so many to choose from, I’m having a hard time figuring out what I want!

Errin - I’m with you Eric. I’ve been having a tough time staying motivated myself. Good to know I’m not alone.

Ron - My motivation certainly goes up and down, but two things keep me moving.

1. I register for events that are “over my head” and know that if I don’t ride I will not get them done. Having a little “skin in the game” helps my motivation.

2. I carry a picture in my portfolio of myself when I weighed about 80 pounds more than I weigh now. Never want to see that in the mirror again.

Eric - Kristy, that is a great question. One that I think may be worthy of a post of it’s own. I think I’ll just get that ready for ya!
Errin – if I don’t get my butt moving soon, I will be in big trouble for the DK200!

Steve - I’m glad the low motivation island is not only inhabitated by me! Race season ended mid November with an awesome season, and now the bikes lonely and dejected. At least they don’t hold a grudge! I think I hear the DK200 calling my name. Eric, I’ve been in the market for a good durable point & shoot, so looking forward to hearing about your current purchase choice.

Fonk - I’m right there with you on the fitness/motivation thing. Since Labor Day I’ve put back on the 5 lbs. I had lost over the summer, plus a couple more. I need to get my arse in gear…

BTW, I’m totally jealous of you on that LX5 score. I missed that deal literally by seconds. I saw your post on FB that night, went to Amazon to buy it, and the deal was still active. However, after I logged in and the page refreshed, the deal was gone. D’OH.

Mike Hall - My new Nikon AW100 was my motivation to get out and ride today. Overall I have had plenty of motivation because I am currently working on loosing weight. I was 247 and when I hit 210 I get to order my new cross bike. I am at 228 right now and it has only been 2 months, it is crazy how fast you can loose when you eat right and keep your activity level the same. My new AM kit dosen’t hurt my motivation either. LOVE IT!

Steve Fuller - Been running into some of that myself. I signed up for January snow bike race to make sure that I get out and ride for the next month or so. After that’s done, it will be time to start looking at late winter / early spring gravel events.

Sean Herd - WWMD what would monkey do? Layer up and get the heck out there! OR….play some hockey like I am! Work out indoors, high speed, speed walk shopping!?(no better way really), anything! Monkey Hungry! FEED YOUR MONKEY!

LeLan Dains - Sorry Eric, I don’t share the lack of motivation. After 2 months of a broken collar bone and a full month of travel I am nothing BUT motivated! I have ridden every day for the last week (and ridden quite hard for this time of the year I might add).

Bobby Wintle - eric! ride your bike, take some pictures!! – as gnat would say. i was talk to lelan on the phone the other night and he pointed out that i had actually been riding more than i have been in the last 2.5 years from what i had told him. we started a tuesday morning road ride, about 20 miles @ 6:30 in the morning. It has widdled down to just me and my new friend adam because of the extreme cold. adam has dedicated himself to the DK, and in so doing, i have as well. also we’re doing a thursday night mtb ride at 7:30 with lights. needless to say i’m pleased to finally find the time to ride a bicycle. i miss you and the crew something terrible and i can’t wait for june to get here. give me a call sometime when you’re free and lets catch up. this is my metaphorical “kick in your butt” to go get some miles in!

Shane - Reading about races, adventures and seeing the beautiful images others take are motivating to me. Seeing my own fitness progress doesn’t hurt either. If you’re into ride reports there are a few here (http://gravelquest.blogspot.com/) and hopefully we’ll get a few more gravel events on the Front Range. We’ve got the roads, but do we have the riders?

December 12, 2011 - 10:39 pm

Fonk - Shane: Trust me, the riders are here. We Front Rangers just gotta get it going…
