The Fargo Build

So here it is – the Fargo build. I had a lot of fun shooting this. I shot this as a photo documentary and tried to stay out of the way. I love to shoot as a journalist and let things happen. As you will see, I used an off-camera flash to get the lighting I was looking for. I love the lens flares and the gritty, documentary feel of the images. I will let them speak for themselves – there’s a lot of them. Oh, and those are real bike shop guys from Emporia’s own High Gear Cyclery and Fitness, not paid models in case you were wondering. And I had some fun with the color of the bike – Fun Guy Green.

Matt did a great job and put much love into my new Fargo. If you need a new bike, skateboard, parts, repairs or gear go see Matt and Stephanie at High Gear. They rule.

And for you gearheads – I bought a Fargo Complete. To be honest, I don’t know enough about components to make smart decisions about all of them, and Jason from Salsa assured me this would be a great build for me. I am adding a Brooks Flyer Special saddle and Salsa brown bar tape to match when they come in. I am also thinking about new tires, wheels, racks, panniers and fenders (yes!) for the future ride across USA. But for now, I need to get used to clipless pedals. I’ve never had them.

I have only ridden this baby twice and I love it. I am thinking of entering the Dirty Kanza because of this bike. If you’ve never heard of it check THIS out. I will need to train. I am a little scared of the race, but you only live once, and if I can complete 200 miles of Flint Hills gravel in one day, pretty much anything is possible after that.

Oh yeah, and the infamous Shawn Honea from IM Design  stopped by to see the new bike. If not for him, I would never have gotten into cycling. He got in a few shots.

Once again, thanks to High Gear for letting me invade their shop and for always working with me to get things right. Enjoy the bike shop porn.

Eric - Glad you all liked it – I went a little crazy with the amount of posted pictures and I edited them down! The Fargo is fun to look at, but even more fun to ride!

Jen – Glad you are OK with the big purchase!

Mom – hopefully I will put one together myself someday! That will require a stop motion video…

Man, I need to get some “Fun Guy Green” touch up paint!

justanoldhobo - Eric,
Good pics and nice blog. I have had my Fargo for a week and have put 200 miles on it. I love the bike. I just cruised yesterday in a humid cool 36F afternoon, mostly paved roads but did surprise some people as I rolled across a high grass tree break. I guess they thought no one but them would ever be in the middle of nowhere. The day before I went climbing all the hills in the area and ended slipping the Fargo down as I crossed pavement to mud transition to a field abutting the river. I had a bit too much air for the mud. I am not sold on the Vulpine tires as yet. I slipped on a dirt trail climb the other day but it was probably a little too step.
I am debating the Brooks B17. I currently have them on a Gunnar Crosshair and a Cannondale T2000. The saddle has been reserved for the long riding bikes.
Revolutions help SAD become MIAHF, Man am I having fun.

Eric - Thanks! Man, that’s a lot of milage! I am a bit jealous. I am not convinced about the Vulpines either. I don’t feel real confident taking turns as fast on gravel with them. The Fargo with the Brooks Champion Flyer Special is as comfortable as it gets. I used to feel pain after around 30 miles. 58 miles yesterday and I was fine. Loving this!

Joseph Condron - It’s a lovely looking bike. I love the highlight colour in the black and white shots. It must have taken a long time to do.

Eric - Thanks! It didn’t take too long, I’ve been using photoshop since ’97 or so. This was much quicker than the hand painting I used to do.
