Great entry as always. PB&Js are great, but I've never tried adding honey to them. I'll have to try that out. I've been using the Hammer products for the past couple of months now. I use Heed and Perpetuem. I've found that if I use these products I feel much better during, and after the ride. My recovery is much easier. I've also started using a watch with a timer. It goes off automatically every 10 minutes reminding me to take a drink. I usually do Heed every 10 minutes and Perpetuem every 20 mins. Hope that helps. Best thing is try the different flavors now, so that you can figure out what you can stomach over the long distance of the DK200. You want all of that sorted before that ride.

Thanks Errin! I need to buy some stuff and start experimenting with a full review of course!

hey monkey dude this is a great post indeed. the bald eagles are absolutely amazing, i just wish i could have seen them. lelan is absolutely right on about the pb&j and honey sandwiches, they might get a little sloppy on a hot day, but if you cut them up into bit size slices, 4 pieces for one sandwich, then it minimizes the mess. also we have clif shots, gu gels and hammer gels down at the shop, all of which i use and like. matt carries more varieties of flavors in the gu gels, and therefore it's easier not to get tired of them as fast. can't wait to ride with you again man, sorry this weekend didn't work out.

Thanks Bobby! Don't worry about the Sunday ride - next time for sure. The 105 mile with the insane bike posse would have shredded me on Saturday, good thing my son had a wrestling meet.

Let me just say this is one great blog.I picked up your link on the DK200 site.I will be riding and hoping to finish the DK200.I have reading your post for about two weeks.love the monkey stuff.Irode 25 miles of gravel today in the rain and some wind with temp at 45 degrees. The whole ride i kept thinking about the commets you made about the visualization.I was cold, wet and tired of the wind in my face but i began to think about my training and the DK200 and the fact that i am 48 years old and in the best shape of my life due to riding this bike. most my friends are on meds for high blood pres.or high colestrol.ALL of a sudden i began to warm up alittle and ride some faster,by the time i rode in site of my truck i was really jazzed and feeling strong.I loaded the bike and grabbed a hot coffee at the nearby c- store and phoned a bud to brag alittle about my ride.Cant wait till your next post. also the stuff i use on long rides is GU GEL works good between solid foods and i use endurolites in the pill form, take a couple every hour and it keeps the mucsles loose and lactic acid under control when it hot temps.outside. I carry some shot blocks, kinda like gummee bears lots of sugar and taste good. ride on my man ride on. mark g.

Love your story! I am happy someone got something out of the visualization stuff. I felt kinda dorky writing about it, so I am glad it helped! I added more of that in my next post. Thanks for the info, I am gonna try a lot of products before the DK200 including PB and honey sandwiches. Keep feeding that monkey and stay off the meds!

Clif Bars work for me, especially in summer heat when a lot of other bars just turn to goop. Nuun isn't nutrition is it? Just electrolytes, I think. I've heard good things about Hammer products, but haven't tried any. On-the-bike nutrition is something I need to figure out as well for DK.

I think Cliff bars give me sustained energy, but they make me really bloated. Nuun is electrolytes only without trying to "feed" you - I read and hear good stuff about it.

Good ol' PB & Honey sandwiches my friend. I cut 'em up into little bite size squares and put them in a sandwich bag. You got your protein and good sugars from the honey for an energy boost.

Man, I love PB and honey! Do they turn to mush in the KS heat?

Eric,
Great post, and great pics.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I spent a spring weekend at a B&B in Cottonwood Falls. It was very quiet in the best sense of the word and, as you know, the scenery is quite nice. If you find yourself there on a Friday night, the music jam at the Emma Chase Cafe is lots of fun to go to: local people making music and singing.

I about stopped in the Emma Chase Cafe to warm up and have some coffee, would have if I didn't have to be back home on time. That's such a quaint little town.
