Look at my Monkeys

My Inner Monkeys

Here is a list and description of the monkeys that control my head. I also explain the categories I have used for the blog at the end of each monkey description. Let me know if I forgot an important monkey on the list. If we starve these monkeys bad things happen. Feed your Monkeys!

 1.        Adventure Monkey

This is the monkey that craves adventure, risk and new experiences. If we don’t feed this monkey, we end up looking for adventure in negative and destructive ways. This monkey became more demanding to me later in life when I had settled down with a family. And by settling down, I mean I stayed at one job for more than 4 years. I had unknowingly stopped feeding him and I became restless and depressed. When men hit middle age and haven’t fed their Adventure Monkey, a mid-life crisis occurs. We all need adventure, men and women alike. I use this category for my cycling adventures (and pictures) and any other adventures I may go on.

 2.     Love Monkey

This monkey needs unconditional love. When this monkey isn’t fed, nothing else matters and things go bananas. I use this category for posts about friends and family, pictures of the kids or whatever.

 3.     Spirit Monkey

Within all of us is a spiritual being. This monkey searches for a higher power to give our lives meaning. I believe very strongly in the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. When this monkey goes hungry, we live a life that has a hole that needs filled. I will use this category to talk about God and religion. I took a few years of life to just study the Tanakh (bible) and Brit Chadasha (new covenant), so it comes up a lot.

 4.        Creative Monkey

This monkey is inside us all, and wants to create. This may be something artistic, but the Creative Monkey may also start a business, solve problems or do anything where the creating process is at work. Starving this monkey leads to a dull, colorless and depressing outlook on life. I will use this category for photography or the art of others (email me with your story!).

 5.        Rational Monkey

This monkey wears spectacles and analyzes everything making sure not to let us misstep. This is a very valuable monkey, but left to run the show, no risk taking occurs and life is predictable and boring. My Rational Monkey has gotten stronger with age, but has never been my strongest monkey. This monkey didn’t want me to waste my time with this blog, so he doesn’t get his own category.

 6.     Gear Monkey

This monkey loves shiny new toys. He likes to read about technical specifications and purchase the latest devices. Without control, this monkey will max out your credit cards and leave you broke and unhappy, since he always needs the latest gadget. I will use this category to talk about cycling and photography gear.

 7.        Survival Monkey

This monkey only wakes up when we are in trouble. This could be in life and death situations or in life situations when hard decisions need to be made. I haven’t used this category yet, but would like to showcase stories of people that have survived through tough circumstances.
