If you’ve been holding back from booking a vacation for the last couple of years due to a worrying financial outlook, then you should definitely bite the bullet and arrange the holiday of a lifetime in 2014. The economy is picking up a little, and most of us have more money to play with this year, which means staying at home or spending a weekend in Blackpool simply isn’t good enough. After working so hard for the last few years, you deserve to take a break and spend time traveling for a change. At the end of the day, you only live once, and time is ticking.
This said; many people find it difficult to decide on the perfect location for their summer holiday, which is probably why so many of them end up traveling to Spain or Italy time and time again. Thankfully though, I’m an avid traveler, and as I’ve seen so many of the world’s top locations, I’m probably a good candidate to give you some advice. So, if you really do want to book the ideal break this year but you need a bit of help deciding on the perfect destination, then give me your full attention for the next five minutes, and I’ll highlight some of the places I consider to be most suitable. Obviously, you’re under no obligation to follow my advice, but hopefully it will help to give you inspiration at the very least.
1 – Amsterdam, Holland
Although some people consider this city to be more in-tune with hippy-types and those who enjoy hanging around with Rastafarians, this is mostly a misconception. Amsterdam was once one of the busiest ports in western Europe, and so it’s incredibly diverse with residents from all over the world. Also, there’s some fantastic architecture in this location, and a canal system of the like you will have never seen or experienced before. On top of this, the Dutch people are very friendly and always accommodating to tourists, especially those who are wise enough to learn a bit of the local language.
2 – Prague, Czech Republic
This is another destination you really have to try out if you’ve never been here before. One of the reasons so many westerners visit this place is the price. Almost everything is absolutely dirt cheap, including the food, drinks and accommodation. This means you’ll be able to have a fantastic week away without breaking the bank. I’ve personally been here a number of times since 1999, and have found it improved slightly every time I return. Again, there’s lots of beautiful architecture and enough activities to keep everyone occupied. During the day, you can stroll through the Old Town browsing through interesting products in unique little shops, and by night you can have a relaxing meal or get wasted at the largest super-club on the continent.
3 – New York City, US
If you’re a huge movie fan, you probably already know your way around New York City (or at least you’ll know the street names), and this is one of the reasons so many people choose to visit this location on their first American holiday. The destination as everything you could possibly want. With five star restaurants at every turn and some of the most impressive concert halls in the northern hemisphere, you’ll probably need a lot of spending money if you decide to visit this year, but boy will it be worth it. So, if you want to see the land of skyscrapers first hand, and visit such famous locations as Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, then it’s wise to start making arrangements straight away because this trip will take a lot of careful planning.
4 – Sydney, Australia
Do you come from a land down under?… no?… then maybe you should go there on holiday this year and see what all the fuss is about. Australia has a rather strange history, and although they don’t like to promote it, most of the continent was populated by British prisoners who were sent to work on plantations a few hundred years ago. Still, the country has grown and prospered, and now it has become one of the most desirable holiday destinations for western tourists. Sydney in particular is absolutely stunning, and somewhere you need to visit at some point in your life. With amazing weather all year round and alluring man made structures like the world famous harbour and Opera House, you’re guaranteed never to get bored (but if you do, just stick another shrimp on the barbie, and everything will be okay).
5 – Miami, US
They don’t call Florida the sunshine state for nothing you know, and this is one of the main reasons people visit the city of Miami on their summer holidays. Except for during the stormy season, you’re certain to find gorgeous weather here and many gorgeous people to match. There’s also lots of activities to keep you busy during your stay, and enough top class restaurants to ensure you always find something nice to eat. Who knows; you might fall in love with the place and come back a couple of year later to buy a couple of Miami condominiums for yourself and your friends. Stranger things have happened in this completely unique and diverse location.
6 – Bangkok, Thailand
Though many people associate this place with the infamous ladyboys, there’s actually a lot more to Thailand than meets the eye, and so you should definitely add it to your list of considerations. Flights to Bangkok are usually quite expensive, but as accommodation can be obtained for almost nothing and an evening meal will cost you less than £1, it’s unsurprising so many people come back here year on year. I actually have a couple of friends who decided to backpack across Thailand and Cambodia a couple of years ago and they left with only £2000 in each of their pockets. Three months later, they returned with over £1000 still in their pockets. Hopefully this illustrates how cheap it is to live and have a good time over there.
Now we’ve come to the end of this article, I hope some of the locations I’ve mentioned have been added to your list. I promise you that a holiday in any of the destinations above will leave you feeling content and refreshed for a long time to come, but at the end of the day, the final decision is up to you.
Have a fantastic time, wherever you decide to go.
