Why You Should Avoid Asbestos while Traveling

While avoiding asbestos while on the road can take diligence to protect you and your family, it can be done. You may not think much about possible asbestos poisoning, but if you frequently travel and stay in older hotels, you could be risking exposure each and every time. Avoid contracting diseases like mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lining of the lungs.

Where is Asbestos Lurking?

Asbestos, dangerous microscopic mineral fibers that can lead to various cancers, is typically found in building materials, textured paint, insulation and heat-resistant materials. Banned in 1977, says the Consumer Product Safety Commission, asbestos still lurks in older buildings built before that. This includes hotels, motels and inns where you may be staying on vacation. You should be especially diligent about protecting kids and pets when you suspect asbestos may be present.

Avoiding the Threat of Asbestos?

If you don’t take precautions to stay away from materials containing asbestos, you could breathe the fibers in when they’re released into the air from ceiling tiles and construction materials. As a result, you could contract asbestosis, mesothelioma and other types of lung cancers without even knowing you’ve been exposed. Often, it takes many years or even decades for the diseases to manifest themselves. Asbestos can hide in anything from coatings and stovetop pads to adhesives and hot water pipe coverings. If you do get diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, you can get the monetary reward you deserve as part of mesothelioma compensation and settlements. You can get compensated for your medical bills, time out of work, pain and suffering, and more if you have a qualified attorney on your side who specializes in asbestos law.

Be Aware When Traveling

While your own home may be newer and free of asbestos, the same can’t be said for old hotels, business offices and demolition sites, all places you may spend a significant amount of time at when away from home. If you are renting an older vacation home, you often don’t know the history of the structure. Keep an eye on kids and pets, and make sure they don’t eat chipped paint or pick away at old insulation and drywall. Owners of rental homes don’t always take the same care to update the structure, so there could very well be asbestos present.

Remember, asbestos is not clearly identifiable. Unless it’s marked in some way, you won’t know it’s there. It’s wise to simply steer clear of materials you suspect contain this harmful substance. Never try to remove it or touch it, as this can release the asbestos fibers, which you could ingest. The EPA says you should avoid any crumbling drywall or deteriorating insulation, just in case. If you’re visiting an old construction or demolition site for work, don the proper safety work wear, including gloves and facemasks. If you think you’ve come into contact with asbestos or suspect it’s present in the room where you’re staying, report the incident and leave its removal up to the professionals. They can wear HAZMAT suits to take a sample of the item in question, then provide remediation if needed.

When it comes to asbestos, it is important to be vigilant, especially when you spend a lot of time in older buildings, such as hotels built before 1977. Keeping your family safe when traveling is key to ensuring their continued health.

The Travelling Vaper’s Guide to E-cig Laws around the World

While they’re one of the hottest trends of the year, the laws regarding the use of electronic cigarettes can by somewhat vague, as the product is still relatively new in many countries. People who vape generally know the laws about ecigs in their own city or even the country in which they live, but if you’re planning to travel the world you don’t want to get caught out when it comes to the rules and regulations about using electronic cigarettes in public places. Before you go jet setting around the globe, take a quick read of our guide to e-cig laws around the world.

Europe

The vast array of European countries can make it a bit difficult to decipher the laws, particularly if you’re frequently crossing borders on your holiday. The United Kingdom is home to one of the largest populations of Vaper’s in the world and so the laws here are pretty clear. Electronic cigarettes are absolutely legal in the UK and are not confined by the current smoking laws. As with most countries around the world, the purchase of electronic cigarettes is limited to those over the age of 18.

Other counties around Europe that have legalized electronic cigarettes for personal use include; Switzerland, Romania, Portugal, Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Hungary & Germany (just to name a few).

United States & Australia

Electronic cigarettes have been the source of much debate in the US since 2010, when the FDA attempted to implement laws for the product under the same structure as those regarding tobacco products. The classification went through the American legal system and was eventually overturned in 2011, ruling that the FDA cannot place restrictions on electronic cigarettes as they do not contain any tobacco. Due to the lack of Federal Laws regarding the use of electronic cigarettes, many states around the country have implemented their own laws, so be sure to check the regulations for your intended destination prior to travelling.

Australia follows similar laws to the United States, in the way that regulations are highly dependent on the state in which you are travelling. Laws will also vary greatly for electronic cigarettes with nicotine and those without, so be sure to keep this in mind when holidaying. More and more e-cig companies, including the newly launched BLACKHAWX, are coming into the picture, however, creating greater increased popularity for the product and, in turn, greater awareness and understanding.

Remember to be Cautious & Respectful

When it all comes down to it, a lot to do with the rules surrounding electronic cigarettes are often left in hands of the proprietor of any given establishment. If you’re travelling and in unknown territory, it’s always better to check with the locals about the appropriate and acceptable places to vape, particularly if you’re in a restaurant or shopping centre.

As we said before, electronic cigarettes are quite a new product on the market, so always be aware that not everyone will grasp the concept of ‘vaping’ rather than ‘smoking’ – in many cases this is due to the smoke like affect that is produced by the water vapor in your e-cig. Travel with caution, take your electronic cigarette, have an amazing adventure and follow the guidelines above to avoid any trouble or confusion!

How to Add a Little Bit of Luxury to Your Backpacking Trip

Backpacking has long been thought of as a way to travel the world on a shoestring budget; hostels, night buses, hitchhiking and camping are all connotations that spring to mind. However, with more people making the decision to go globetrotting on a budget, little luxuries are finally becoming affordable for travellers. If you want to add a little bit of luxury to your backpacking trip then here’s how to do it.

Luxury Backpack

This is one thing a backpacker should never scrimp on anyway, especially as this could be your only companion for weeks, months or even years. Luxury backpacks come in all shapes and sizes, to suit every budget. Depending on where you’re going in the world, you can look for backpacks that have useful added extras; such as a compartment for clean, fresh water. Make sure you test out a whole range of backpacks before deciding on the one that is right for you. This will be the best travelling luxury you spend money on!

Luxury Hotels on a Budget

Everyone thinks that travelling on a budget has to involve staying in hostels or setting up camp. However, luxury hotels are now becoming more affordable than ever, which means that most backpackers can treat themselves to a night or two on a comfy bed. A 5 star luxury hotel may be expensive in the busiest cities, so look for small towns or villages around the tourist hotspots. The fewer tourists that visit, the cheaper the prices. Try turning up on the day and asking if they have any spare rooms available; hotels don’t like having empty rooms, as it costs them money.

Glamping

If you prefer the idea of camping during your trip around the world, then why not spend a night or two glamping? Glamorous camping, glamping, has risen in popularity in Europe, USA and Australasia, meaning plenty of opportunities wherever you are in the world. A typical glamping site will have luxury tents or yurts, with running water and electricity! Choose a mid-week night to go glamping, and you’ll save even more money.

Cheap Taxis

Although you may be used to spending a fortune on a 5 minute taxi ride back home, you’ll find that taxis abroad are far cheaper. This is one of those little luxuries that all travellers can treat themselves too once in a while. You don’t necessarily have to be going anywhere; just use it as an opportunity to explore the town or city you’re in. Make sure you find out the price before agreeing to the taxi ride, as some countries’ drivers will try and rip travellers off. Take a break from the night buses for a while and afford yourself some luxury travelling.

There are many other ways a backpacker can experience little luxuries on their globetrotting trip, too. Even ordering the most expensive thing on the menu in Thailand will be half the price of a sandwich back home. Look up the average prices for each place you will be visiting and find out which countries you can afford to splurge in!

The Adventures Don’t Need to End When It Gets Dark

One of the disappointing things some people find when they travel is that the excitement can peter out once it gets dark.

After all, if you are far from home in a city you aren’t familiar with then you might feel that there is little you can do other than head to your hotel room in the evening. Well, the good news is that there are some things you can do to make sure that the adventure doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

Play Some Games

When you are at home and stuck in the routine of going to work and carrying out domestic chores it can be difficult to do all the things you have always wanted to do. For instance, you might have heard about how good online games are now but have you ever had a chance to try them out? When you go on holiday this can be your big chance to do those things you would like to sample but don’t usually have the time for. If you take away a laptop or mobile device then you can go on a games site such as the one here and find out what all the fuss is about.

Whether it is bingo, roulette or something else you want to play, the internet is now a fabulous place to give it a whirl in an online casino or games site. This is a lovely way to wind down after a busy day of sightseeing and can make the evenings fly past a lot more quickly too.

Go to a Bar or Restaurant

If you are travelling alone then you might not automatically consider going to a bar or restaurant in the evenings. For a start, you might never do this when you are at home. However, when you are away on a trip this can be a fantastic way of staying away from your hotel room a bit longer. You could very well meet someone interesting to talk to you but even if you don’t there is no need to fret. Finding a table where you are tucked out of sight and unobtrusive is a good idea for travellers who don’t want to feel out of place. You should also take a good book or a newspaper with you. Sipping a couple of cups of coffee or trying out some local snack can be a wonderful way to round off the day before you head off to bed. If you are a bit bolder then you might see this as an ideal opportunity to speak to some locals or to some other tourists.

Learn the Local Language and Culture

For some people the real pleasure of travelling comes from immersing themselves in different cultures. If you are in a destination which has a culture and a language different from what you are used to then the evenings bring a chance to learn about them. You could buy a local newspaper and sit down with a dictionary to try and work out what has been happening there and what kind of place it would be to live in. Watching the TV is another option. You can avoid the English speaking channels and instead see what the local shows teach you. Even if you don’t understand much of it there is sure to be something which interests you. The radio can be more difficult to follow if you aren’t all that hot with the lingo but it is a fine option for those tourists who have already made a good start on learning the language.

Advice For Finding The Right Hotel For You In Australia

For such a massive country in terms of land size, Australia has an incredibly small population of roughly 23 million people. However, it’s a seriously eclectic place, made up of different peoples and cultures scattered across mostly large cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. There are many different places to stay in Australia, so much so it can be overwhelming choosing where you are going to book.  However, working out which type of hotel you want to stay in can help make your choice a little easier.  Obviously if you are a business traveller and are visiting Sydney, you may have heard that the hotels in the Central Business District are the best to stay in.  Not only are they situated in the city centre, but they are normally 5-star and include many onsite features as well and are located close to public transportation, shopping centres and restaurants, cafes and other eateries.

Boutique hotels may be more up your street if you are looking for something a little different and unique compared to the more popular and widespread hotel chains.  Although not often cheap, boutique hotel owners normally pride themselves at providing a much higher standard of service than you would likely get from a larger hotel.

One popular destination for many travellers with a smaller budget is the 3 star hotels in the Darling Harbour area.  These hotels are slap bang in the middle of the entertainment district of Sydney and are close enough to the harbour that you are privy to some picturesque and stunningly beautiful views of the bay and the city.  As this part of the city is bustling with tourists, there is no shortage of things to do with shopping centres, galleries, gardens, playgrounds and many different eateries within close proximity to your hotel.

The actual fact is that it doesn’t really matter where you choose to stay while visiting Sydney or Australia, you will still be looking to find a good deal to make your budget (whatever that may be) go as far as it possibly can.  Below are some tips to help you do just that.

Don’t settle on the first hotel you come across that takes your fancy.  Check other hotels in the area, comparing and contrasting them to make sure you find the very best deal for what you need from your hotel stay and room.

One of the best ways to find great deals is to search online using sites such as Sleep And Go, where you can find hotel rooms that will not only meet your personal preferences but also your budget too.  While you are looking online for hotel rooms, take a look also at reviews by people who have stayed in those hotels.  By doing this you will have a better idea of whether or not you are going to receive the service you expect.

If you are looking at the deals online and they all seem to be out of your price range, try contacting some hotels directly.  In the past, hotel managers have been known to offer reduced rates or special offers to customers phoning, that were less expensive than the advertised rates.  Another tip while you are on the phone to hotel managers it to ask about last minute deals.  Empty rooms don’t make the hotel money, so often they will reduce the price of rooms by ridiculous amounts just to ensure they are filled.
