Top Sporting Events to Watch When Visiting Australia

For the die-hard sports enthusiast, vacationing in Australia is the ultimate getaway. The land down under is one of the world’s top areas for almost any sport. From motocross to rugby to football, Australia is host to many sporting events annually.

When vacationing over in Australia, here are the top sporting events you can’t miss.

1. Motorsports

In Australia you can get your fill for motorsports year around. Melbourne is host to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix while over on the Gold Coast there’s the Gold Coast 600 Surfers Paradise. You can also check out the Sydney 500 and the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. Or, for a real Australian experience, follow quad bikes, 4WDs, and motorbikes from Perth to Kalgoorlie in the Australasian Safari. Don’t forget to grab your best Fox gear to represent while you’re watching.

2. Yacht Racing

For those interested in all things boating, beginning the day after Christmas, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race is set to kick off. Everyone from maxi yachts to weekend racers can take part in the event, which starts at Nielsen Park in the Sydney Harbour and continues more than 1100 kilometers to the finish line in Hobart, Tasmania.

3. AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015

Beginning early January, the biggest football tournament Australia has ever hosted will kick off when the Australian Socceroos play Kuwait in the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Sixteen different countries including Japan, Iraq, China, and Korea Republic will compete against each other in 32 matched over 23 days in Australia’s host cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, and Newcastle.

4. Australian Open

Early January through February in 2015 Australia will be host to the Australian Open, which will be held in Melbourne Park.

5. Australian Open of Surfing

In Sydney, New South Wales, the Australian Open of Surfing will be a festival of world-class athletes, artists, and fans coming together in celebration of the sport that got its start at Sydney’s Manly Beach. The Australian Open of Surfing is an extension of the US Surf Open. The free event runs for nine days and is host to international music line-ups, great sporting action, and art.

6. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the main event of the international cricket calendar as well as one of the world’s largest international sports tournaments. The 2015 Cricket World Cup will be hosted by both Australia and New Zealand. The tournament kicks off on the 14th of February at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and then will return to the city for the final match at the end of March. Australia will hold 26 of the 49 matches in the host cities of Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, and Perth.

7. The Bledisloe Cup

Australia’s Wallabies will compete with their rugby rivals the New Zealand All Blacks. The Bledisloe Cup is held at least once a year in Australia as part of the Tri Nations tournament.
